The Internet of things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer location and status data captured from tagged objects and people over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

The Internet of things has evolved through the convergence of multiple tracking and security technologies, real-time analytics, machine learning, commodity sensors and embedded systems. Traditional fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation and others all contribute to enabling the Internet of things.

Also known as IIoT, industrial IoT devices acquire and analyze data from connected equipment, (OT) operational technology, locations and people. Combined with operational technology (OT) monitoring devices, IIoT helps regulate and monitor industrial systems. Also, the same implementation can be extended for automated record updates of asset placement from a small component or a complete object.
